Caledonia Street, in Sausalito California,  may well be the last of a breed. Few interesting neighborhoods so accessible to tourists have managed to resist Disneyification and retain their slow pace of life. And while Caledonia Street today may have lost some of its Counter Culture edge (having once been a hangout for radicals, artists, and musicians in Sausalito's bohemian heyday), it’s still colorful and friendly, a great place to spend an afternoon.

The neighborhood’s has many quaint culinary jewels including Sushi, and other restaurants serving excellent fare, Italian with outdoor patio seating, is a great place to sit down on a sunny afternoon, watching the neighborhood’s goings-on over a bottle of wine.

There’s no better neighborhood in small-town America for window-shopping, and visitors to Caledonia Street would be remiss if they came here only for the great food. Specialty showrooms such as the Asian art-and-antique store, will beguile and surprise you with the range of its merchandise.

Those with a keen eye will spot some great bargains here, and across the street is Water Street Company Hardware and Supplies, where you can stop to browse an unusual array of tools or take in some conversation with the locals - and perhaps spot a mysterious, plunger-wielding man in a wetsuit.

A leisurely stroll and you will visit or window shop many business's that include the grocery stores, art galleries, pool hall, cleaners, etc.

If it’s a rainy day, you may want to spend some time at Flying Oliver Books, a cozy used bookstore, or take in a movie at the CineArts  theater, which specializes in independent and art house films.
